Oyo APC Governorship Aspirants Reject Alleged Imposition, Demand Credible Primaries Ahead of 2027
Five governorship aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State have raised fresh concerns over the conduct of the party’s House of Representatives primary elections held on May 16, 2026, warning that alleged intimidation, imposition, and manipulation within the party could jeopardize the APC’s chances in the 2027 general election.
The aspirants, who spoke through a communique issued after a meeting held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre, Ibadan, on Monday, said the current situation within the party poses a serious threat to internal democracy, party unity, and electoral success in Oyo State.
The communique was jointly signed by former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, H.E. Engr. Rauf Aderemi Olaniyan, Prince Musbau Asatola Asanike, Barrister Akeem Agbaje, Dr. Ololade Usman Bakare, and Engr. Oyedele Hakeem Alao.
The governorship aspirants alleged that the House of Representatives primary election across several federal constituencies was characterized by intimidation, disenfranchisement of party members, arbitrary disqualification of aspirants without due process, and fabrication of results in some areas where elections allegedly did not take place.
According to them, party members across constituencies such as Akinyele/Lagelu and other parts of the state have become deeply disillusioned over what they described as the sidelining of loyal party faithful and the alleged imposition of candidates against the wishes of grassroots members.
The aspirants further cited the outcome of the Oluyole Federal Constituency primary as evidence that grassroots members would resist any attempt to impose candidates on them, insisting that popular acceptance among party members must remain the basis for emergence of candidates.
They also condemned what they described as the announcement of manufactured results in parts of Oke Ogun, Ibarapa, and Oyo zones despite claims that no election was conducted in those areas. The group maintained that such actions violate both the Electoral Act and the constitution of the APC.
While expressing loyalty to the APC and to Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the national leader of the party, the aspirants declared support for a transparent consensus arrangement, provided it is credible, inclusive, and reflects the collective will of stakeholders and party members.
They stated that whatever decision is eventually taken by President Tinubu after due consultation with party leaders and stakeholders would be respected, stressing that the President’s position remains binding on loyal party members.
The group, however, warned against what they described as compromised direct primaries and urged the National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC to urgently review all petitions arising from the House of Representatives primary elections in Oyo State.
They also appealed to President Tinubu to intervene decisively and ensure that future primary elections in the state are conducted in a free, fair, and credible manner in line with democratic principles.
According to the communique, the APC in Oyo State currently stands at a critical crossroads and risks another avoidable electoral setback in 2027 if issues of imposition, intimidation, and internal injustice are not addressed.
The aspirants reaffirmed their commitment to the APC but insisted they would not remain silent while the party’s internal democratic process is allegedly undermined. They called on the state leadership of the party to embrace genuine reconciliation, fairness, justice, and respect for the will of party members across the state.
