Nathaniel yearns for more after NCAA win

He is also the first Baylor Bear to win the men’s 400m hurdles title since 2001.

“It means a lot, I didn’t get it in the indoors, I felt bad a little bit about it and told my coach. He said we just had to work on it and we did it. God did. It feels like there is more in the tank.

“Even though I won the national title, I feel like I can do more because there are still some mistakes I need to correct. In everything, consistency matters a lot. I’ve been doing 48 seconds the whole of last year and I’m doing 47s this year,” he added.

Nathaniel is now ranked third on the African all-time list behind Samuel Matete (47.10s) and Amadou Dia Bâ (47.23s). His 47.49s also places him at Number 26 on the global all-time list.

In another moment of glory, 19-year-old Samuel Ogazi proved unstoppable in the men’s 400m final, as he produced a stunning 44.84s, improving on his silver medal from last year and becoming the first Nigerian to win the title since Clement Chukwu in 1999.

However, there was heartbreak for Nigeria in the men’s 100m sprint, as Kanyinsola Ajayi and Israel Okon narrowly missed out on medals. Ajayi, who lit up the semi-finals with a wind-assisted 9.92s, came in fourth with a slower 10.13s in the final. Okon settled for seventh in 10.18s
