Agada makes BAL team in Al Ahli’s first triumph
D’Tigers star Caleb Agada was in fine form on Saturday, as he led his Libyan franchise Al Ahli Tripoli to emerge winners of the 2025 Basketball Africa League, and also make the BAL all-defensive first team, Ajilete weekend Sports Extra.
Al Ahli defeated reigning holders Petro de Luanda of Angola 88-67 in the final which went down at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria, South Africa on Saturday.
Agada, who came off
the bench in the final against the Angolan side, delivered 10 points, four assists and two rebounds to help the coach Fouad Abou Chakra-led side to an emphatic victory to become the first team from Libya to win the elite tournament.
During Saturday’s showpiece game, the Libyan powerhouse took the first quarter 27-19, having made 19 field goal attempts and converting 42.1 per However, they dropped the second quarter 16-19, no thanks to their poor 29.2 per cent field goals conversion rate from 24 field goals attempted. Upon resumption of the second half, the third and fourth quarters saw Al Ahli blow out their Angolan opposition 23-16 and 22-13 respectively, with attempted field goals reaching 20 and 15, while field goals made were 50 and 40 per cent. The total turnover rate was in favour of the Libyans, who made 16 compared to 18 made by Petro de LuandaLeading the scoring charts in the final was Al Ahli’s Assem Marei, who dropped a game-high 22 points and added 19 rebounds plus three assists, teammate Fabian White put up 18 points and nine rebounds, while the impressive Jean-Jacques Boissy registered 12 points. They alongside Agada make up five members of Al Ahli who recorded double digits in points scored.
Agada made the All-Defensive first team list alongside Al Ahli Tripoli teammate Jean-Jacques Boissy (Ahli Tripoli), who scored 12 points in the final win over defending champions Petro de Luanda. APR duo Obadiah Noel and Aliou Diarra were also included, while Teafale Lenard Jr from South African outfit MBB made the cutAgada’s performance saw him score five points in Al Ahli’s seeding fixture, which they lost 85-74 to Al Ittihad Alexandria of Egypt. He picked up in the quarter-finals by scoring seven points to help Al Ahli thrash Kriol Star of Cape Verde 107-81, before putting up his best performance of the entire BAL season when he recorded 17 points to help Al Ahli to a resounding 84-71 thumping of eventual third-place team APR of Rwanda in the semi-finals. In the final, he came up with 10 points, four assists and two rebounds as Al Ahli became the first Libyan team to win the BAL competition.
The victory saw Al Ahli Tripoli claim their first-ever continental crown, while head coach Fouad Abou Chakra picked up the BAL Coach of the Year award
