OYO NORTH: WHY PROFESSOR ADEOLU AKANDE


Professor Adeolu Akande, a distinguished indigene of Otu in Itesiwaju Local Government Area of Oyo State, has consistently demonstrated exemplary leadership and dedication to public service, positioning him as an ideal candidate for the Oyo North Senatorial seat in the 2027 General Elections.


Professor Akande's academic journey is marked by remarkable achievements. He earned his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in Political Science from the prestigious University of Ibadan, culminating in a Ph.D. in Comparative Politics in 1997.  His scholarly contributions include over twenty publications in reputable local and international journals, reflecting his profound understanding of political dynamics.


Demonstrating versatility, Professor Akande transitioned into law, becoming a lawyer 23 years after obtaining his Ph.D., further enriching his capacity to serve in legislative roles. 


Oyo North Senatorial District, encompassing 13 Local Government Areas, has diverse needs that require informed and dedicated representation. Professor Akande's blend of academic prowess, administrative experience, and legal expertise uniquely positions him to address these needs effectively. Throughout his career, Professor Akande has remained committed to community upliftment. His initiatives have consistently aimed at improving the socio-economic conditions of his constituents, reflecting a genuine dedication to public service.


Professor Adeolu Akande has held significant leadership roles in Nigeria's information and communication technology sector, notably as Chairman of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and later as Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).


During his tenure as Chairman of NITDA, Professor Akande was recognized for his efforts in introducing new innovations within the agency. His leadership contributed to the agency's mission of fostering the development and growth of information technology in Nigeria. In acknowledgment of his contributions, he received the "Outstanding Digital Leader" award at the 27th National Conference of the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) in 2018.


Following his service at NITDA, Professor Akande was appointed as the Chairman of the NCC. His tenure at the NCC was marked by a commitment to enhancing the telecommunications sector's contribution to Nigeria's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and improving national security through better communication infrastructures. He emphasized the importance of funding research and development, restating the Commission's commitment to supporting research initiatives and prototypes that could advance the industry. 


Under his leadership, the NCC continued to play a pivotal role in regulating and facilitating the growth of Nigeria's telecommunications industry, ensuring that it met international standards and effectively served the Nigerian populace.


Through these strategic roles, Professor Akande has significantly influenced Nigeria's ICT landscape, promoting innovation, research, and development to position the country as a competitive player in the global digital economy.
